| Local leader selected as international business leader of the year |

The International Association of Business Leaders has announced that local business leader, Dr. Ilse Piippo, Vice President of Vaccine Safety and Clinical Development for FIT Biotech, Plc. in Parainen, Finland, was selected recently as the International Association of Business Leaders' 2003 International Business Leader of the Year. Dr. Piippo and the other award winners were recognized at a special banquet held in their honor on 26 April 2003 in Montego Bay, Jamaica during the Association's annual leadership conference.
The IABL Award Committee and the Association's Board of Advisors examined over 10,000 nominees this year for the International Business Leader of the Year, International Entrepreneur of the Year, and International Manager of the Year awards. All nominees were carefully screened for their professional accomplishments, community involvement, personal leadership, communication skills, and business development activities. The award winners for each category represent a unique degree of accomplishment, commitment to improving the lives of all people, and development of future generations of caring leaders.
As the Vice President of Vaccine Safety and Clinical Development for FIT Biotech, Plc., Dr. Piippo oversees the development of vaccines and the corresponding conduction of pre-clinical safety studies and clinical trials. Dr. Piippo facilitates the company's attainment of clinical and regulatory goals and manages formulation development processes. Established in 1998, FIT Biotech, Plc. is an innovative global company with a worldwide research network engaged in the development and commercialization of novel DNA vaccines and diagnostic products for currently unmet clinical needs. Trained as a pharmacist and medical doctor, Dr. Piippo applies her expertise to assuring vaccine safety, quality assurance, and directing outsourcing efforts to meet quality, production, and cost-effective standards. She draws from her superior communication skills and bilingual abilities in Finnish and English to negotiate with third parties and to network with a variety of international partners in the formation of strategic alliances within the region. A significant career achievement, Dr. Piippo conducted the first clinical trials in Finland with DNA plasmid and assisted in founding the first biotechnology company in Finland with Good Manufacturing Practice regulations (GMP) as established by the US Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Piippo, responsible for the registration of four new chemical entities worldwide, was highly involved in related product development from the initial molecular synthesis through marketing stages. Possessing a wealth of pharmaceutical experience coupled with solid business acumen, Dr. Piippo has assisted in strengthening the clinical, quality assurance, and regulatory departments and functions within FIT Biotech, Plc. Looking toward the future, Dr. Piippo plans to develop an HIV vaccine and to build a global clinical, pre-clinical, and formulation network with strategic partners.
